Using Twitter to Land a Job

You can find a job using Twitter, yes we’re serious.

I had heard for quite some time that people could use Twitter to land a job, and when I heard it in one of my college classes I pretty much laughed it off.  I figured that there is no way you can find a job that is interesting with 140 characters.  I mean how would you possibly fill all of the great duties and responsibilities, perks, information about the company, etc?

It turns out that 140 characters is a great start.

You don’t personally have to have a Twitter account to get tips and job leads.  Most people keep their Twitter account open so nearly all Tweets are public meaning anyone with or without an account can read them.  The catch is you need to know where to begin.

A good start is to follow Career Purgatory where we’ve created lists of recruiters and corporate career accounts that are active on Twitter. You can follow our lists directly and see what jobs are available and actively connect with recruiters to get your foot in the door.

Twitter Lists

Twitter allows users to create lists for related content or users.  We’ve created a handful of lists for our @careerpurgatory account.  Our best lists being immediately useful to people will be our collection of Recruiters, Corporate Career pages, and misc job postings.

Recruiters – We have compiled a list of corporate recruiters for major companies, and third party recruiters that you can connect with to get placed into a job.

}
}).render().setList(‘Careerpurgatory’, ‘recruiters’).start();

Jobs – We have found many of the largest corporate career Twitter accounts, and various job search accounts with job postings.

Again, you do not need to be a Twitter user to see the activity in these lists.

Advanced

Using Twitter you can create a lot of noise and shout at people, companies, and try to engage in conversations, some of which may lead to a job.  Take a look at what the creative director for Moosejaw has to say about it.
