MI Shifting Gears Program
The Michigan Economic Development Corporation or MEDC is hosting a program that it calls Shifting Gears to help people change their careers in Michigan.
This program is a bit misleading in the email that was probably sent to everyone on unemployment. The required webinar is free, however the actual program is not. The program requires you to submit an application, resume, and program fee of $500 via application link that is e-mailed directly to you following the webinar.
It does seem to offer a decent value over a short community college course from the looks of it many of these items are pretty unique. You will get these items:
- 10 days of workshops
- Career assessments & professional coaching sessions
- Weekly peer networking sessions
- Mentors who are small business leader
- 3-day small business simulation
- Leadership Development assessment (360)
- Professional networking events
- 2 week/80 hour internship
- Small business case studies
- Guest speakers –career transformers, small business owners/employers, resource support, etc.
- Career assessments/feedback sessions
- Mock job interviews
- Feedback for resume development
If the $500 didn’t scare you off, you can get involved in the program just attend a Webex online on one of these dates:
- Thursday, June 30: 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
- Wednesday, July 6: 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
- Thursday, July 7: 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
