MARVIN Now Excludes Third Party Education Employees

For those of you keeping up to date on Michigan unemployment law it was recently changed by Michigan House Bill 4452.  The law amends the Michigan Employment Security Act.

In the event that you are an employee of a third party contractor for a school system or a university in Michigan you will not be eligible for Michigan unemployment more commonly referred to as MARVIN.

Third party employees may be eligible if there is no reasonable belief of future work in the upcoming session of school.  The goal was to eliminate workers collecting benefits for summer breaks and then returning to work in the fall or winter.  This new change isn’t an earth shattering change as it has already worked this way for direct employees of Universities and school system for some time.
