California may boost Minimum Wage to $10 by 2016

State of California minimum wage increase to $10 per hour

The State of California is very close to setting its minimum wage rates to the highest in the country.

This change will have workers see their hourly pay jump from $8 to $9 on July 1, 2014.  Then to $10 an hour on Jan. 1, 2016, under legislation which received strong support this week from the state’s Governor Jerry Brown and other legislative leaders.

Fast Facts:

  • 90% of minimum-wage workers in the state are over the age of 20
  • Nearly 2.4 million of the state’s children live in a household with a parent who earns minimum wage
  • The proposed bump would boost a full-time worker’s income by about $4,000

The change would still be less than what striking fast food workers are demanding at $15 per hour.  While there are plenty of people on both sides of the $15 an hour rate there is one business in Michigan paying $15 in quick serve food Moo Cluck Moo.  Read how they are doing it.
