Advanced Micro Devices AMD Lays off 1,400 workers

We generally do not break out individual corporate layoffs.  But we have been getting traffic for weeks leading up to this and feel we need to help direct people to the news.

AMD has cut 1,400 workers today or about 12% of its workforce.

The interesting thing in this report is that in the first quarter of 2011 the CEO stated that they were looking to hire 1,000 workers, or about 10% of it’s work force.  It turned out that many of those positions were through attrition from other parts of the company.

So it remains to be seen if the company is going to be close to a break even headcount or if the company is actually going to end 2011 12% smaller than when it started 2011.
