What does the EDD 1099-G Look like?
Here is a sample California EDD 1099-G form to review.
What if I haven’t seen my 1099G?
Call the EDD Interactive Voice Response (IVR) System at 1-866-333-4606 and follow the instructions to get your Form 1099G information or to request that your 1099G be mailed to you. This option is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Form 1099G tax information is available for up to five years.
To speak with an EDD representative, call 1-866-401-2849, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Pacific time), except on state holidays.
Wait I have to pay taxes on my California EDD payments?
Yes you do. EDD benefits are taxable by the federal government but not at the state level. What the government giveth, the government taketh away.
But I Didn’t Collect Unemployment Insurance Payments or Benefits in 2020, I was working the whole time.
Buckle up, you may be the victim of identity theft, a fraudster may have used your social security number and name to file benefits on your behalf, and collected your payments. As you may know already California had billions of dollars of unemployment fraud in 2020, it is possible you were a victim.
If you receive a Form 1099G but you did not file a claim for benefits and you think that someone else filed a claim under your name or Social Security number, visit Fraud and Penalties: What You Need to Know.
If you receive mail from the EDD that doesn’t belong to you, write “Return to Sender” on the envelope and send it to the following address:
EDD PO Box 826880
MIC 43, Sacramento, CA 94280-0225
Could this reduce my 2020 tax refund that I was expecting?
We are not tax specialists, or Certified Public Accountants (CPA) but for example if you did not elect to have your income taxes withheld when you set up your unemployment benefit payments, you will have to owe income taxes to the Federal government. Now if you had extra taxes withheld from your prior employer(s) you may already be covered, but this could offset your refund amount that you may otherwise be expecting.
As always the best tax strategy is actually to owe nothing extra to the government, and have as small of a tax refund as possible. If you do find yourself with a tax refund, and the ability to save it, check out our Yotta online banking review to get higher interest rate return.
When can I file my 2020 tax return anyway?
Another new development is that for the Federal Government tax return unlike in years prior, you can’t send in your return before February 15, 2021, which is two weeks later than normal. This will also delay your ability to get any eligible tax refund that might be owed to you.
