Trends In Retail: Black November
Black Friday has been a staple of retail for decades. One of the trends that this Great Recession has been able to bestow on us is that Christmas shopping will really only be affordable if you wait in huge lines for Black Friday deals.
Last year some retailers and a lot of websites were trying to push Black Friday forward to give more incentive to spend essentially trying to make November into Black November. Retailers know that the more trips you make and pass by their displays the better chances of getting you to pick up a couple of extra items. Best Buy is advertising that you can put items on layaway to make it easier to take your gifts home, Kmart has been doing layaway for years even when it wasn’t trendy before the Great Recession.
The biggest surprise for many however is that Sears will be open on Thanksgiving Day. It appears that this detail went unnoticed to the general public until it was recently put out in the form of a Press Release by Sears (along with some money saving deals) but it was known by Sears Associates since at least July 23rd of this year.
It was met with mixed results by the staff:
There are many more posts mostly in disbelief, and quite emotional, at the prospect of working on Thanksgiving Day. Whatever your feelings are, Sears will in fact be open for the first time in its 124 year history.
For those of you who can’t stand to spend that extra penny more, Walmart will also be open on Thanksgiving Day. Sorry all of you retail workers stuck in Career Purgatory who will be stuck working on Thanksgiving Day.
